(SIMSEA) was held at the Manila Hotel from 19th-20th of November 2018, along with the launching of the Future Earth Philippines Program (FEPP) headed by National Scientist Dr. Lourdes Cruz. The two-day was participated by almost 120 participants coming from the Academe, Government institutions, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), and other Civic Society groups. The 2nd Regional Symposium highlights the importance of resilient marginal seas in the South and East Asia regions against contemporary challenges and the need to strengthen collaborations among experts which will enhance the need of protection and management of marginal seas. The event was graced by the presence of the Honorable Secretary Fortunato Dela Peňa of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Dr. Mazlan Othman, Director of the International Science Council- Regional Office for the Asia and the Pacific (ISC-ROAP).
Speakers and participants from various fields resented recent advancements in research such as Oceanographic monitoring system, Blue Carbon, Hazards Detection and Monitoring, Governance, Socio-economic, and Food Security and Health. A Panel Discussion entitled “South and East Asia Marginal Seas: Future Directions for Sustainability and Knowledge-Action Networks” and was Chaired by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) President, Dr. Rhodora Azanza was also held during the last day of the event, where notable Scientists from various fields of expertise shared their thoughts and discussed potential solutions in addressing pressing issues that affect the sustainability of the marginal seas in the region.
